Women in Comics – Chrissie Zullo

Artist Chrissie Zullo created the covers for one of my favourite series — the Fables spin-off Cinderella. We were delighted when she answered our questions!

How did you get into comics?

I was into manga in high school, and then started reading American comics in college. I think my first graphic novel I read was “Batman: The Long Halloween”.

Tell us a bit about the projects you’ve worked on.

I started by doing cover work for Vertigo’s “Cinderella: From Fabletown with Love”, and then “Cinderella: Fables are Forever”. I’ve also done some interior work for “Madame Xanadu” and “Fables”.

What is your favourite work that you’ve done so far?

I actually get quite critical of my work after it has come out, and look back and think “I could have done better!!”.

Did you ever get advice about the field that you’d like to pass on?

Always keep it fun, don’t let it become “work”, or you will hate it.

What is your favourite thing to write or draw?
I draw female characters so often, that when I have time to just doodle in my room I mostly make up things to draw, like monsters or robots.
In an ideal world, in what direction would you like to see your project evolve?
An original graphic novel that I can work on and create in my spare time.

Any last words?

Just hoping I can continue to make art every day.
