Reader Spotlight: Sarah

Today’s spotlight is on Sarah, aka Comickergirl! You can find her on twitter at @Comickergirl, and on Deviant Art.

Tell us about yourself!
Well, let’s see. By day, I’m a mild-mannered digital art student. By night, I’m the artist known as Comickergirl, who spends far too much of her time drawing superheroes.

How did you get into comics?
I think my earliest experience with comics was probably a cartooning class I took in second grade. (Which wasn’t so much cartooning as it was filling in coloring book pages of cartoon characters.) The teacher was a huge fan of Calvin and Hobbes. The first ‘assignment’ we had in that class was to color in a picture of Spaceman Spiff. I thought he looked pretty great, with his blaster and perpetually-damaged spaceship, so as soon as I could, I convinced my parents to buy a copy of ‘Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons,’ and I kind of went from there. :D

Do you just read comics/express your love in other ways?
I draw comics of my own, because I love the medium so much. Currently working towards a regular webcomic, so we’ll see how that goes. But when I’m not working on original stuff, I’m usually drawing fanart of whatever series I’m currently reading. *cough* Batgirl *cough*

Some comics you’re currently reading/enjoying?
I’m pretty much loving the New 52 Batgirl title. I picked it up on a whim, actually, as I was not a huge DC fan prior to that. (Always been more of a Marvel girl.) But the art looked pretty great, and it was the first issue, as opposed to, like, #572 or something intimidating like that, so I figured, ‘What the heck?’ And now I’m hooked. Also really into Action Lab Entertainment’s ‘Princeless.’ Great story. Great art.

Favorite Character?
Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider…yeah, you get the idea. :D

Favorite Artist(s)/ Writer(s)?
Aw man, don’t know if I can narrow it down to just a few! I’ll try. I’m a bit of an art geek, so I guess I’ll start with my fav artists. I’m a big fan of Pat Olliffe, Dustin Nguyen, Stuart Immonen, Sean Galloway, Rafael Albuquerque (gosh I hope I spelled that correctly) Faith Erin Hicks, Ben Caldwell…really, there are so many artists whose work I admire and look to for inspiration when it comes to my own work, but those are the ones at the top of my extremely long list, so I’ll leave it at that. (Okay, I lied, one more: M. Goodwin, who did the art for Princeless. It’s closer to the ‘style’ I favor, in that it has a bit more of a cartoon-y slant. It’s just…man, it’s just so great, can’t even find words to describe it!) As for writers, again, really tough to narrow down. BUT! Since I’ve already rambled on about all the artists, I’ll keep this short and sweet: Tom DeFalco. Why? Spider-Girl, that’s why.

Favorite Storyline?
Dark Knight Returns.

How do you buy your comics?
Individual issues at the local comic book store, typically. I rarely buy trades, unless I’ve missed huge portions of a title. But as my comics gradually take over my living space (Seriously, they are everywhere. Stacked on my desk, tucked away in drawers and cupboards, monopolizing any available shelf…) I might be forced to switch to digital copies, to save room.

What are some things you love about comics? Some things that frustrate you?
Heh, as previously mentioned, I’m a huge art geek, so I LOVE that aspect of comics. I can sit and geek out for hours over a single panel, no joke. Sometimes I’ll read a comic, but I won’t even bother with the words, I’ll just stare at the art. Alas, it is also the art that causes me the most pain. The way women are drawn sometimes (most of the time)…my spine aches in sympathy!

What does your dream book look like?
I’d actually just really love it if Marvel brought back MC2’s Spider-Girl. (With Pat Olliffe on art…not Ron Frenz. Both are amazing artists, but I just have to admit that I like Olliffe’s work a little more.) It was a great book…really fun, and such an awesome character. I miss it.

Any final thoughts?
I guess I just want to say thanks for this opportunity, and thanks for reading! COMICS RULE.
