Review: Agent Carter One-Shot

Agent Carter

Not only did we get to see Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at Comic Con 2013, but right before the panel began, we scored tickets to the same night’s screening of the Agent Carter one-shot.

They took our phones/cameras at the door, but it was absolutely worth it. Around 15 minutes including the credits, the screening was fun, packed with fans, and Hayley Atwell herself showed up for a quick Q&A after the screening with the director, producer and writer.

If you want a hint at the one-shot before it’s available on the Iron Man 3 DVD, check out IGN’s four minutes of footage, featuring action Peggy.

Keep on reading after the jump for light spoilers! (And if you’d like, have some mood music.)

Agent Carter picks up one year after the events in Captain America. Peggy has been shuffled into obscurity and is never picked for field ops, thanks to the chauvinist Bradley Whitford (who is great here) who believes she’s only there because they wanted “Captain America’s widow” to feel useful. One night, Peggy picks up the phone when a mission order comes in, and instead of reporting in she decides to take it on herself.

Agent Carter - PeggyThis is where Peggy truly shines, and as a huge Peggy fan, I was absolutely thrilled by what we see. She floats along with grace when she walks across a parking lot at night, but takes down men larger than her with little difficulty and lots of awesome. Though it gets a little hairy toward the end, Peggy is triumphant – and with hardly a hair out of place.

In the end, Howard Stark personally asks for Peggy so that she can run S.H.I.E.L.D. with him.

Happy face

Agent Carter is a slick, well-written fifteen minutes of retro fun. A little noir, a lot classy, equal parts funny, thrilling, and triumphant, Marvel’s one-shots are starting to look and feel as good as the movies themselves do. This one-shot was great for any Peggy fan, but it only makes me want, as one person asked for during the Q&A, a retro Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. show. Who doesn’t want to see Peggy and Howard’s adventures running S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 40s?!

After the screening, we came up with a theory that is so off the wall and hilarious that I can’t help but love it: Peggy is so Tony’s real mother. (Also, she becomes M in the James Bond universe later on. Favorite head-canon. You cannot tell me otherwise.)
