Original Sin #6

- Rat Queens #7: Because it’s awesome and kick ass and fun and has some surprisingly great character work. Betty’s my girl, yo.
- The Wicked + The Divine #2: I did a make up look before the book even came out, soooo yeah. Definitely on my list, and it’s only just edged out of my pick of the week, because RAT QUEENS.
Elektra #4: This seems a bit similar to the Black Widow book in many ways, but while I love Phil Noto, I think Michael Del Mundo is doing some of his best art in these pages, and Mark D’Alfonso’s colors are dreamy. I’m hot or lukewarm on the story line depending on how I feel that day, but the art always elevates the book for me. There’s a fluidity and beauty to it that matches the Elektra in the story, and I will keep buying the book as long as Del Mundo and D’Alfonso are on it. My pick of the week simply because I am that much in love with the art.- Magneto #7: While I’m still trying to sort out how I feel about Magneto in this series, I can’t help but admit that it’s incredibly engaging.
- Ms. Marvel #6: Kamala all day every day thanks.
- Original Sin #6: I’ve fallen behind on this event, but I do like what I’ve read so far. Thanks for finally doing an event right, Marvel.
- She-Hulk #6: I stopped with issue four because I just could not deal with Pulido’s art on this book, but since Ron Wemberly has taken over, I’ll be picking it up again. Art aside, She-Hulk has been a really fun read.
- X-Men #16: Another book I’m behind on, but it’s always a must buy.
- The Wicked + The Divine #2: I raved last month about the first issue of this series, I’ve been dissecting in my head ever since, and I’ve been ridiculously impatient for this one. I can’t wait to see where this series goes, and this’ll be the first thing I read this
week. The Gillen/McKelvie/Wilson triumvirate is on FIRE. - Ms. Marvel #6: A must-pull for me these days. I love Kamala a lot.
- X-Men #16: I’m actually a bit behind on this title, and I’m hoping to catch up this week. I love this book and I love these characters.
- SECONDS: Not exactly on my pull-list, since it’s a graphic novel, but I’ve been looking forward to Bryan Lee O’Malley’s follow up to the Scott Pilgrim series for a long time now. Technically, it came out yesterday, but I’m counting it among the new comic book day offerings anyway. It’s not available on Comixology yet, but you can find it on Amazon.
- THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #2: This site might very well devolve into the “OMG Gillen & McKelvie keymash” but I was a bit of a late comer to the first issue due to the size of my backlog, but now I am antsy for the next one.
- Ghost #6: It has all the things I love: revenge, serious threat to the heroine, borderline absurd villain with a side of fantastic art and a tight script.
- Fables #142: God this comic has been so hit-or-miss over the years, but I’m a girl who loves to follow to the finish so I’m hanging on. Plus I’m pretty certain I’ll miss it when its over.
- Supergirl #33: One of the few DC titles that I’m still buying (that is until the new Batgirl debuts in October), I’m still not certain I feel about how this current arc, but like I said before I have to see where it goes. Kara-the-Red-Lantern has certainly been interesting no matter what.
- Ms. Marvel #6: I LOVE KAMALA. Can one just want to squeeze a book and like feed it warm milk and call it a day? Cause that’s pretty much where I am with this one.
- Original Sin #6: I’m kind of digging this sprawling crossover. It has the right combination of things that I enjoy with only minimal headtilting caused as the backstory fills in.
- From last week: Lumberjanes #4/All New X-Men #29: Both of these were out last week, but I forgot to pick up my comics or add to the post, so I’m belatedly giving these a mention. So good!
- There’s also bound to be heaps of impulse/I forgot to mention buys not yet on the list, but findable on the lists of the others!
- Fables #142: This comic has seen far more than its share of ups and downs over the years, but with the finale rapidly approaching, I’m on this train to the end of the line.
- Judge Dredd #21: Does anyone else understand the level of my co
ncern for Judge Anderson? I don’t think that they do. - Rat Queens #7: I’m kinda relying on Scott to say something far more eloquent about anticipating this comic every month than I can, so I’ll leave it at FINALLY. Bring on the tentacles.
- The Wicked + The Divine #2: One issue into Gillen/McKelvie’s latest, and I am well and truly hooked. Let’s see if they can reel me in.
- All-New X-Factor #11: Probably my favourite Marvel book right now. I don’t understand how something so wildly different can feel like such a natural continuation of Peter David’s X-Factor Investigations stuff. I guess storytelling style really does count for a lot. Nobody is happy and everything is wonderful, the end.
- LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36: I believe I’ve made my opinion here known already.
RAT QUEENS #7: I don’t know what Leshia expects here, my entry was very nearly just me saying “Rat Queens” over and over again. It’s a rambunctious, foul-mouthed, adventuring party as hard partying rock band comic, filling the void in my life that was left by John Rogers’ Dungeons & Dragons and its never-ending series of desperately insane plans. And as it’s gone on it’s adding depth to each character when it could so easily have stayed ‘they’re loud and they smash things’ and we wouldn’t have complained. The current arc, for instance, delving into Dee’s past and also promising, yes, tentacles. The bonus to its irregular publishing schedule is that it’s a fun surprise. The down side is that I can never get enough Rat Queens.- The Wicked & The Divine #2: True story, I didn’t have this on my pull list last month. I know. I thought, hey, maybe I’ll just pick it up in trade. But then I did pick up the first issue and then we all got obsessed with figuring out the symbols and what is their deal even, and so now, yes, I am on the train, let’s see where this thing is going.
- Ms Marvel #6: The first arc of this was about as solidly played as I think a first arc can be. It’s funny, it’s genuine, it says important things about the heroic impulse and it does it perfectly through the lens of the culture at the heart of it. In a week without Rat Queens this would easily have been my pick. Excited to see what the new arcs about. Is this one Wolverine? I know people get mad about Wolverine guest appearances but grumpy Wolverine guest appearances are honestly pretty great. Remember that time Molly Hayes punched him out of a church? And if you do hate them, it gets the Obligatory Wolverine Guest Appearance out of the way.
- Original Sin #6: Last issue was good but also mostly backstory, filling in some corners of the puzzle. Excited for it to get back to filling in the picture itself with some actual current day developments on the arc.
I’m still catching up on last week’s comics, but once I do, I’ll be checking out this bunch:
Avengers World #9: Nick Spencer has become one of my favourite Marvel writers over the past couple of years, and I’m always a sucker for ‘superheroes in a bar’ stories. With Caselli on art, there’s no way I’m missing this book.- Magneto #7: I’m surprised how much I’ve been digging this title, since I’ve never been a big fan of Magneto’s outside of the movies, but Bunn’s weaving an interesting story and the art is always appropriately moody.
- Nova #19: I was iffy on this book at the start, but once Duggan took over writing duties, it really found its groove. Sam Alexander is a great new character; if you’re a fan of what Bendis is doing over in Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man, give Nova a look. It has a similar vibe, with a lot of heart.
- Original Sin #6: I’ve said it before, but if Original Sin sticks the landing, it’ll be my favourite Marvel crossover in years. Aaron’s noir twist to the typical superhero summer event is a welcome change from bombastic fight scenes, and if it holds a candle to the revelatory fifth issue, I think I’m in for a real treat.
- Original Sin: Hulk vs. Iron Man #2: In the absence of having Mark Waid on an ongoing Iron Man title, I’ll take what little I can get from this tie-in. Playing up the Science Bros elements from the MCU has proven a smart choice for Marvel, and this story seems eager to turn that dynamic on its head.
- She-Hulk #6: One of my favourite books any month, She-Hulk #6 is my pick of the week. Charles Soule has taken the best elements of previous Shulkie runs and added just enough of his own sensibilities to create something new. Featuring one of my favourite supporting casts and an appearance from Wyatt Wingfoot, I’m totally jazzed to see how the current storyline’s gonna play out.
