Gotham Academy #2

- Gotham Academy #2: I think we were all surprised at just how much we enjoyed the
first issue, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes. - Rocket Raccoon #5: This series is simply a pure joy to read, among a whole host of titles that continue to be filled with drama and grittiness for the sake of being as realistic as they can be. Sometimes I just want over the top action starring a talking raccoon, okay?
- X-Men #21: Still just pulling this out of habit because it’s been pretty lackluster lately – not even going into space has saved it. However, I just learned that G. Willow Wilson will be taking over writing duties in a couple of issues, so I am incredibly excited for that.
Another light week, sitting out the Spider-Verse stuff for right now, if only because I’m not sure how invested I want to be in it. We’ll see.
Gotham Academy #2: I really enjoyed the first issue of this, but it’s going to take a few issues before I’m completely sold. It’s a book that seems to be targeting a younger age group, but I’m not entirely sure that it’s one that manages to be kid-friendly as well as interesting for an adult readership. But it’s kind of adorable, so I’m in through at least the first arc.- Rocket Raccoon #5: Rocket Raccoon is one of my favorite books being released right now. It’s fun, funny, and I spend almost as much time laughing over the background gags as I do over the actual dialogue. Skottie Young is knocking this book completely out of the park.
- American Legends #1: I have no explanation for this one, other than it plays into my weakness for exploiting history by making it weird(er). Throw in some Napole
on conspiracy and I’ll give it a look. It’s a light week, I can afford it. - Legendary Star Lord #5: I just love how Peter Quill gets himself into crazy amounts of trouble. Hilarity always ensues. Plus I like how he and Kitty Pryde take turns swapping roles in their Han Solo/Princess Leia dynamics. It’s just all I want right now.
- Amazing Spider-Man #9: I’m just hoping for a little clarity when it comes to all “let’s just have ALL the Spider-things!” idea that has fueled this multiverse story. I also want to see if there’s another appearance of Spider-Gwen, but who knows?
Another light week, always great for wallet recovery and catching up on older stuff.
- Usagi Yojimbo: Senso #4: Already halfway through, and this series still feels like it has so much ground left to cover, geez. And after the absolute decimation of the cast last month, I’m kinda scared to see it all go down. War of the Worlds, Usagi-style, this book is great.
- Fairest #31: It’s tough to get hyped for the final issues of this series when the main Fables title is ending alongside it, but gosh darn it, it’s good enough to make me want to try.
- All-New X-Factor #16: Every remaining issue is a treasure, AXIS crossover or no.
Gotham Academy #2: I wasn’t entirely sold on this one’s first issue – I liked it, but I wasn’t entirely engaged by it. But the art alone is enough for another shot at it, and the writing is good.- Miracleman #13: Weird as hell, weirdly intriguing. Not up to the That One Bit I know about but closing in.
- Spider-Verse Team-Up #1: My interest in Spider-Verse mostly extends to the USM related stuff – your Miles Morales and your Ultimate Jessica Drew. But extending the concept of the Spider-Man team-up to a variety of Spider-Men (and -Hams) also seems like a fun bit, so I’ll be checking those out.
I remain hilariously behind on my comic book reading, so there are already second issues out of titles I’d intended on starting with #1. To that end, my list this week is very short while I catch up on close to a month of books.
- Birthright #2: I said it on Twitter: this book contains one of
my least favourite tropes, where the already awesome and badass female character has to usher a wet blanket of a male protagonist to his destiny as the chosen one. This crops up more or less everywhere, and I’m tired of it. That said, the premise of this book is so strong that I’m willing to overlook this exhausted trope in favour of enjoying the exploration of how stories like The Chronicles of Narnia might have gone. - Velvet #8: Definitely my favourite of Brubaker’s output at the moment. The last issue was amazing, and I’m so looking forward to the rest of this arc.
