What We’re Reading Wednesday

Wednesday! Glorious comic book day! Check out our post to see what we’re looking forward to reading this week, and let us know what you’re picking up as well.

Our pick of the week:

Death of Wolverine #1
Story: Charles Soule
Art: Steve McNiven
Publisher: Marvel Comics

IT’S THE BEGINNING OF THE END – 3 MONTHS TO DIE ENDS HERE

•  The beginning of the end is now here … THE DEATH OF WOLVERINE!

•  THREE MONTHS TO DIE, the loss of Wolverine’s healing factor–all led to this, the single most important X-Men event of the decade.

•  Logan has spent over a century being the best there is at what he does…but even the best fade away eventually.

  • Black Widow #10: Spy shenanigans with Natasha continue! However, while I do love Phil Noto’s work, I wish it were a little more dynamic when it comes to various action Moon-Knight-7-Cover-71e29scenes. His colors work really well for the more pensive pages, but the action loses a bit of kick under his pen. Either way, I still enjoy it.
  • Death of Wolverine #1: Yeah, okay, I’m biting. He’ll be back soon, but I’m curious to see how this all plays out.
  • Moon Knight #7: I’m giving Wood/Smallwood two issues. I’m sorry you guys had to follow such a dynamite team and that you’re probably gonna be judged hardcore for following Ellis, but I’m giving you a chance! Don’t blow it!
  • Original Sin #8: FINALLY. I was hoping issue 7 would tell all and 8 would wrap things up, but I guess we’ll see how it all goes.
  • Rocket Raccoon #3: This is silly and Skottie Young’s art is fun and that’s pretty much all I need out of this title.
  • X-Men #19: I wasn’t so keen on the last issue, but it could prove to be interesting and shake things up a bit.

  • detail (2)Death of Wolverine #1: I’m pretty sure that Wolverine won’t be dead very long, but I’m looking forward to seeing how the Marvel universe functions without him. Mostly, I’m in it to see how the X-ladies react (Laura, Jubilee, Storm), but I figure I should start at the beginning.
  • Legendary Star-Lord #3: I’m an issue behind on this, so it looks like I’ll be doubling up this week. I’ve been all about the Guardians lately, though. Which leads me to…
  • Rocket Raccoon #3: This book continues to be an absolute delight. Both issues 1 and 2 had moments that left me laughing out loud. Skottie Young is doing great things with this book.

Leshia

  • Lumberjanes #5: Gotta meet my twee quotient for the month, or I get all surly.
  • Usagi Yojimbo: Senso #2: Bring on the aliens.
  • Fairest #29: While I haven’t been feeling this title for a while now, I really hoSquidder 3pe Mark Buckingham continues to try his hand at writing; he’s got a lot of potential.
  • Red Sonja: The Black Tower #1: Not expecting great things from Frank Tieri, but as a Sonja fan, I’ll give it a look-see.
  • The Squidder #3: Having backed the Kickstarter, I’ve already read it, and folks, with some great digging into the Squidder’s past, it’s a good ‘un.  As long as you love things that are both gorgeous and horribly dismal, I suppose.
  • All-New Doop #5: Bring it on home, you weird little series.
  • All-New X-Factor #13: Let it just be said that I am really, really going to miss Quicksilver on this book when he gets swallowed back up into the Avengers machine next year.
  • X-Men #19: Thought Marc Guggenheim’s debut last month was a nice improvement for this title, so naturally, he’s only on the book for a four-issue arc.  Sigh.  Marvel Comics: Enjoy Them While They Last.

  • Miracleman #10: I find this one an oddball but it’s a Classic and so I shall read the whole thing, apparently it gets a lot more messed up? That Original Author dude tends to the messed up, so we’ll see.supfoes15
  • Moon Knight #7: Will the new team keep Moon Knight’s cool new costume and cause and vibe? Will it be any good? Let’s find out, and then drop it immediately if not.
  • Original Sin #8: FINAL PREDICTIONS TIME. In a suprising homage to Who Shot Mr Burns?, the Watcher was shot by Danielle Cage.
  • Superior Foes of Spider-Man #15: Still not cancelled! Until two issues hence when it is cancelled. Let us all hope this is simply so that it can be immediately replaced with a not-really-a-tie-in to Superior Iron Man, Superior Foes of Iron Man. In the meantime, #ibelieveinoverdrive.

  • Black Widow #10: Noto draws beautiful covers, but I continue to feel like he’s out of
his depth as a storyteller; the setting in an espionage book is as important as the characters, and the guy has a strong aversion to backgrounds. Nevertheless, while Black Widow isn’t always a must-read for me, the overarching story is finally starting to pick up a bit, and I’m always game for a Hawkeye appearance.Original_Sin_Vol_1_8_Textless
  • Captain America #24: So, per last issue, Sharon’s not dead, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but I’m curious to see what she’s been up to.
  • Death of Wolverine #1: The Wolverine 2 (or whatever it’ll end up being called) is being released March 3, 2017, so going by Marvel’s existing track record, Wolvie’ll be back just in time to open up in cineplexes everywhere in a couple of years. That said, I really enjoy Soule as a writer, so I’m curious to see how Logan bites it.
  • Original Sin #8: I just want Aaron to stick the landing, ‘cause it’s been one fun ride so far.
  • She-Hulk #8: Old Man Cap and Shulkie! What’s not to love?
  • Superior Foes of Spider-Man #15: Sad this book’s on its way out—and hoping it gets collected in one nice hardcover—but I intend on enjoying every last minute of it while it lasts.
